Iain Robertson Now Showing at The Rose Hotel

Linden Hall Studio collaborates with The Rose Hotel to present contemporary abstract art in a distinctive hospitality setting

Linden Hall Studio in Deal, Kent is pleased to announce a new collaboration with The Rose Hotel, showcasing works by contemporary abstract painter Iain Robertson. A carefully curated selection of paintings from Robertson’s recent exhibition Putting on Paint Part II is now on display within the hotel’s dining room, offering visitors a fresh and engaging way to experience his work.

A Leading Voice in Contemporary Abstract Painting

Although a relatively recent addition to Linden Hall Studio’s programme, Iain Robertson has been an established figure in contemporary art for several decades. Born in Cyprus in 1955 and raised in Edinburgh, he studied art between 1978 and 1982 before developing a sustained practice. He now lives and works in Cornwall, with a studio at Porthmeor Studios in St Ives.

Robertson’s abstract paintings are characterised by layered surfaces, gestural mark-making, and evolving forms. Rather than depicting external subjects, his work explores the process of painting itself - resulting in expressive, immersive compositions that reward close attention.

Experiencing Art in an Intimate Setting

This latest presentation at The Rose Hotel in Deal offers an alternative to the traditional gallery setting. Displayed against the hotel’s distinctive wood-panelled dining room, the paintings respond to shifts in light, texture, and space, creating a dynamic viewing experience.

By placing the works within a boutique hotel environment, the collaboration invites a more personal and contemplative encounter. Visitors can engage with Robertson’s paintings at close range, appreciating their scale, surface, and detail within a relaxed, everyday setting.

Continuing a Creative Partnership

This exhibition marks the third collaboration between Linden Hall Studio and The Rose Hotel, reflecting a shared commitment to supporting contemporary art within Deal’s growing cultural landscape.

The works on display are drawn from the two-part exhibition Putting on Paint. Part I was presented at Loweworks in Faversham, a project space established by sculptor Jeff Lowe, while Part II was held at Linden Hall Studio. This new presentation at The Rose brings together selected works, offering a natural continuation of the exhibition within a single, intimate space.
