Curating in Conversation: The Art of a Cohesive Exhibition

Whilst the team at the gallery are busily preparing for our upcoming exhibition, it gave us a moment to think about how we go about curating a show.

Curating an exhibition is about creating harmony — finding the points where different voices, materials, and moods meet. It’s not simply the act of placing works on walls or plinths, but of building a dialogue: between artworks, between artists, and between the viewer and the space itself.

A good exhibition allows each artist to speak clearly while ensuring every piece responds thoughtfully to those around it. The space becomes a kind of conversation — where light, rhythm, and proximity create meaning as much as the works themselves. The challenge lies in giving each artist their moment of individuality, while also shaping a unified, immersive experience.

At Linden Hall Studio, this principle comes to life in the current exhibition featuring paintings by Arthur Nealglass by John Corley, and ceramics by William Plumptre. Though working in distinct mediums, all three share a deep sensitivity to surface, texture, and light — qualities that make their works resonate powerfully in one another’s company.

Neal’s paintings, capture the subtle energy of place and memory. Nearby, Corley’s glass refracts light into movement, echoing the tones of Neal’s palette while introducing a shifting sense of transparency and reflection. Plumptre’s ceramics, grounded in form and tradition, anchor the exhibition with a quiet strength — their glazes offering another dialogue with light, depth, and material.

Together, these works form a balanced and contemplative whole. Each artist holds their own space, yet their pieces seem to listen to one another — painting, glass, and clay intermingling to create an exhibition that feels both varied and seamless. It’s a study in how distinct practices, when carefully curated, can create a shared language of texture, stillness, and light.
