EVENING & MATINEE SCREENINGS
In ANSELM, acclaimed filmmaker Wim Wenders creates a compelling portrait of Anselm Kiefer, one of the most innovative and important painters and sculptors working today.
Filmed over more than two years, the film traces Kiefer’s journey from his native Germany to his present home and vast studio complex in France. Moving through monumental paintings, sculptures, landscapes and architectural spaces, Wenders reveals the artist’s creative process and his enduring fascination with myth, history and memory.
Literature, poetry, philosophy, science, mythology and religion run throughout Kiefer’s work, while past and present continually overlap. The result is not a conventional biography, but a poetic encounter between two major German artists, both born during the final months of the Second World War and both profoundly shaped by its aftermath.
Offering rare access to the places and ideas behind more than five decades of Kiefer’s practice, ANSELM captures the extraordinary physical scale and atmosphere of his art and invites audiences to enter the remarkable world he has created.
